There are various parts in supervision, leadership, and management that relates to an individual’s personal traits. People who are dedicated to great performance and quality in work help develop skills on the job and to work towards making changes in their personal behavior to reflect his or her position. The skills that are developed in a person’s life could change his or her performance on the job. Success means many different things to people. Some people will think wealth is a sign of success, others will see it as helping individuals as being successful.

Self-evaluation on the author’s position, desired position, personal drive was done on the these points managing environment, planning, and design of the program, program evaluation, and leadership. This paper will show the effect of Peter Senge’s Five Disciplines on the skills and where there needs to be development. The author is employed at the Habilitation Technician which provides daily services that are one-on-one to clients who have mental disabilities, epilepsy, and bipolar disorder. The position is a lower-level one in the field of social services.

The author would like to have a job in the same area of human services or upper professional level. There will be consideration looking for employment in mediation, case management, and mental health evaluation. There may be components that will hinder an achievement of desire state and restraining forces. These components may bring up triggering mechanisms that may help to ensure success in passion for the job, values, communication, and energy. When a person has personal driving force he or she are “more likely to make it occur.

” (Lewis, Packard, & Lewis, 2007,p. 268) The author is experienced in managing all the resources within the small environment like individual clients. Experience is working together with a team that is treating and developing a plan to care for the individual. In addition to working together with the individual and the team the author also help work with other human resources in other Page 3 departments. When one is working with little supervision he or she tend to do more work efficiency.

Even thought his or her work experience is supervising a small group of 10 or less employees. The author has skills in budgeting, personal finances, and resources. The author also poses computer and software skills which include many of the software application. In the authors current position he or she perform annual evaluations for the team and each individual client. Restraining forces is were there “are points of resistance or things get in the way of change”(Lewis, Packard, & Lewis, 2007, p.

268). In human services there are character of indifference and hostility which make things hard when trying to reach certain goals. The author found that after doing self-assessment there are things holding them back even though they do have many strengths. The lack of experience is a set back when it comes to managing, supervision, and leading the group. The author has no experience in large groups or projects and has only worked with small groups that only involve on or two people at a time.

There is little or no experience shown in organizational design. There is also little or no experience in the human resources or as a financial management. The author has vast knowledge and skills of computer programs that are being used but are lacking some of the skills that are needed to properly use the program. When it comes to specialized equipment in the human service field this is were the experience is lacking and falling apart. Large scale programs are also lacking experience when it comes to evaluation.

“Peter Senge’s Five Disciplines of a learning organization are shared vision, personal mastery, mental models, team learning, and systems thinking” (Lewis, Packard, & Lewis, 2007). When a vision is shared shows the employees can show their vision and work out an agreement on the vision that will help them and the organization. The vision in the human service organization is to provide care to as many clients and make sure that it is the best they can receive.

The author’s vision for the human services workers is to follow the vision that the author made as the Page 4 employees vision statement when he or she where fired. Personal mastery shows the growth in learning to make sure he or she understand what is important to each individual and situation they face. Education is important and something that the author believes that needs to be continued so that he or she are able to help others better. Receiving higher education and experience will allow the workers to be more effective and avoid errors.

Assessing mental models one has to identify the underlying assumptions, biases, and stereotypes individuals may have toward a certain situation and the adjustments to ensure the clients is treated fairly. Mental models show he or she how the world works and could change the way he or she behave and act if not brought out to the open. Mental models were made over time and will change from each different client that is served and personal situations they may face. The author is currently working with families who have extremely different religious believes and views.

The situation has forced the author look at his or her feelings about his or her own beliefs and they will handles others who practice their beliefs. Since the author believes his or her beliefs they have came up with respect and knowledge in working within an environment that is diverse. Learning teams require working together with others with complex issues to develop an outcome that is liked by everyone that is involved. Members of the team must make sure that he or she are not bias and respect each team members ideas and differences so the team is successful.

The final four disciplines is system thinking. “System thinking makes sure the interrelationships goes beyond blame of what is currently happening and look for the fundamentals instead of symptomatic solution”(Lewis, Packard, & Lewis, 2007, p. 289). Systems thinking is where he or she think more education, training and development is not strong. Systems thinking is a behavior were education and experience are combined to share a vision, personal authority of the members, and mental assessments to be achieved.
