My Obsession I remember back to when I was a child, in which I would constantly dream of flight and its characteristics of freedom and serenity. Throughout my younger years I collected miniature model airplanes of metal and plastic, longing to be the pilot of the real machine; this obsession continued until the day my grandfather introduced me to radio controlled flight. My grandfather and I visited his model airplane flying field where he effortlessly controlled a piece of machinery which my glowing 11 year old eyes watched in pure awe.The soothing whir of the propeller left me with a calm sensation and a peace that settled throughout my motionless body. Ever since then, I have endlessly been pursuing and achieving this same momentary emotion, as no other sensation has ever been as gratifying to me. After five exciting years of bonding with my grandfather, as well as painstakingly building and flying model aircraft, there is nothing that I enjoy more than visiting that same flying field.
The familiar gravel road to the spacious grassland raises a film of dust, which not only obscures my vision, but is also blown every which way by the wind that unintentionally affects the aircraft. After parking, we struggle to unload the crammed vehicle filled with the covered wooden frames as carefully as possible, being sure not to blemish the delicate airframes that were meticulously assembled. The throaty roar of an engine pierces the surrounding air as the motor of an aircraft is started. The noise changes its pitch to a low purr as the throttle is returned to the idle position.The strong and bitter smell of the exhaust of nitromethane fuel fills my awaiting nostrils. The unique smell of the fuel is one of gasoline and another unexplainable scent that only helps to attribute in the stimulation of my senses. I can feel the strong vortex of air produced by the propeller that is spinning ever so quickly as it pastes my clothing firmly against my skin.

My grandfather hands me the controller as he shouts over the droning sound of the engine, “It’s all you! ” A slight feeling nervousness spreads throughout my body which quickly transfers into a rush of adrenaline.My perspiring hands clumsily grasp the transmitter as I begin to vigilantly test the control surfaces of the model plane. I decide that everything is functioning properly and begin to taxi smoothly across the freshly mowed grass runway. The glint of the red, white, and blue colors of the aircraft are reflected back into my alert eyes by the brilliantly shining sun. I feel the brisk morning breeze against my face and remember what my grandfather has reminded my constantly; to take-off into the wind.I turn the plane effortlessly by applying full right rudder until I am face to face with the miniature pilot figure of myself that has been situated inside of the otherwise empty cockpit. I take a deep breath, reassuring myself that I have flown this plane many times before and attempt to keep thoughts of a multi hundred dollar crash out of my focusing mind.
With the plane still buzzing at the end of the field, I gently ease the throttle forward, and the wheels slowly, almost unwillingly, begin to turn on the sparkling dew laden grass.The propeller begins to spin more rapidly as the plane accelerates and races across the ground and past the backdrop of thriving corn stalks. The airframe is vibrating from the force of the engine and the torque of it slowly cants the plane to the left. To compensate for this, I begin to steadily push right on the right hand control stick on the transmitter and pull it back at the same time to bring the entire airframe off of the ground. A thunderous “EEERRRRRR” is emitted from the engine as it roars past me and departs from the land and into its intentioned home in the awaiting deep blue sky, free of clouds on this particular day.The plane gracefully dances in the air, responding to every single slight movement made by my cautious fingers. I perform simple aerobatics gracefully, including loops, rolls, and inverted flight.
To this point in time, I continue to experience the same adrenaline rush that was felt the moment I was handed the controller. When flying, I feel so free; I am the miniature pilot figure in the cockpit, spinning and turning with the aircraft every which way I control it to. Suddenly, my sweet escape into the blue vastness of the sky is interrupted by my transmitter, emitting a sharp beep, giving me the signal to land.I could not believe that ten minutes had already passed. It felt as though I had taken off no less than a minute beforehand. Cutting the throttle down to about half, I remember the same critical concept of taking-off into the wind applies for landing as well. The plane turns lazily as I bring it closer to me and drop the throttle setting down to its lowest setting.
I hear the familiar purr of the engine at idle as it slows down to a crawl and approaches the runway at a near walking pace. The stable airframe slips closer and closer to the unfamiliar ground until it finally, reluctantly, touches down in the padded grass.I swiftly taxi the plane back to the car, and turn off the still running engine. After stowing away the large airframe, I slowly depart from this familiar place, carefully watching the same evident trail of dust behind the unhurriedly moving car. Upon our departure from the flying field, I become lost in thought, trying to recreate that same feeling of combined excitement and nervousness that I experienced before. It then finally comes to my realization that this exact feeling is what always brings me back to that unforgettable grassland; to recreate that same sensation that I first experienced five years ago.
