The focus of this paper is on Alexis de Tocqueville’s observations on religion in America and on how he developed them in his thinking about the role that religion can play in defending freedom in a democracy. The paper will consider some possible reasons why he may have been concerned about such questions, as well as why his observations and conclusions continue to be relevant for America today.
