Growing up in earlier years the only examples we as American’s had was just by what we were told. In today’s world we are able to communicate better and see more of how the cultures are in other countries. In America all are treated with equal rights, but in Iran there are those with privileges and those with none. Women are treated as slaves and they are dispensable. The Iranians have total disrespect for women.
American & Iranian Cultural Differences When comparing cultures of Women, American women are so fortunate. They are allowed to be in total control of their lives, religious believes, who they marry, whether to have children or not. They are treated as equals to American men in today’s culture.Women have revolutionized the American Culture in leaps and bounds since the 1920’s; going from being completely covered from head to toe; to barely wearing anything in 2010. Even as early as the 1800’s women in America, depending on their financial status, have always had the opportunity for education available, generally most women married and had children right out of high school. They were not treated with respect nor where they taken seriously in the business world as they are today. The days of being victimized by men in any fashion have all but disappeared.

Yes, there is still job discrimination (but this occurs for all in one way or another) and women are still abused mentally, physically and sexually, there was a time when yes the American woman would have been treated as the criminal and told she “Must have done something” to deserve said action. Abuse of women in any manner is frowned upon by today’s American Culture. Men today are raised in a Culture where women are equal and treated with respect personally and professionally. The American Culture has evolved to a point where women run major corporations and hold high political seats. There will be a female president in the future of the American people and upon this occurring the American Culture will most likely make a drastic change again both for men and women. Unlike Iran where women have none of the rights and respect that is demanded by American Women! For 1,400 years men and women lived in separate spaces, females were not openly present in public places. Iranian Women were required to cover their faces when in public and were not allowed to show any parts of their bodies.
Most rapes committed were known to the victims and it is assumed that any female who went out with unrelated men were ‘asking for it’. A majority of rapes are not reported due to the Iranian Culture and that most women would be punished and not the perpetrator. Even their family members will punish and possibly kill them to keep the honor of the family. In 60’s & 70’s the beginning of normal relationships between the sexes for the modern classes. Arranged marriages, polygamy and concubinage were frowned upon by the modern classes.Women attained respectability by marrying prominent men and others such as, Forough Foruzan an actress that portrayed sexuality like never seen before and Googoosh, the legendary singer/actor who became an icon both remained single, independent and masters of their own destinies. Googoosh pioneered ‘culture of having fun’ unlike the culture of mourning and black dresses.
She made singing and dancing acceptable among all classes. Popular magazines for young were published and a distinguished youth culture emerged. For a majority of the population tradition is still the motto.Muslims and so-called ‘Intellectuals’ respond bitterly and violently to de-segregation and free and open relationships between men and women. In the 70’s Muslim women showed up in Islamic attire at Universities and workplaces and ‘all female Islamic schools’ became popular. Women from traditional families have legitimized their presence in public. This has enabled women to meet non related males and relationships have grown outside the traditional domains.
These changes are challenging ‘Arranged Marriages. ’ The last 50 years have made fundamental changed in how relationships were moving towards being normal. The revolution has brought restrictions on where socializing can take place and women’s mobility, segregation, veiling and banning of relationships outside of marriage all is creating abnormal behavior in men and women. The relationships in the Iranian Culture are far from healthy or normal and not expected to improve in the near future. (The Iranian; February 28, 2002) A prime example of the strength of someone’s culture is a family friend who just recently moved back to Iran for an arranged marriage to a man that she has never meet in person. And although it is not what she wanted, it had been arranged since her birth and she would not dishonor her family my refusing, even though she is living in America where she has the right to refuse such arrangement. Summary These are two cultures that will never match in any form, the Iranian Culture has total disregard for women’s thoughts and/or feelings; where the American Culture believes in equal rights but at the same time honor women for all the good that they contribute to the American Culture.
Our only hope is that the women from Iran that are fortunate enough to live in America are able to possibly go back to their country and try to make changes in the culture that would better serve the women of Iran.
