The main character in the story is a young man name “Sammy”. Sammy goes through the stages of being the orphan, the warrior, the martyr and the sage. In the next paragraphs, you will see the transitions that Sammy goes through in such a short period of time.

The girls who walk in to the story have a revolution which causes Sammy to step out of his “comfort Zone” if they had not came in none of this would have happened.In the story “A&P,” by John Updike, the main character Sammy makes the leap from an adolescent, knowing little more about life than what he has learned working at the local grocery store, into a man prepared for the rough road that lies ahead. The martyr is the motherly character, as stated in the online dictionary (dictionary. com1) the definition of a martyr is: a person who undergoes severe or constant suffering. Like the mother, Sammy actions as the martyr in the story when he starts to get upset and almost seeming jealous when the butcher is looking at the girls. n the story it says that mc Mahon, the butcher,”… was sizing the girls up”. (updike2) In the story Sammy gets to where he feels sorry for the girls.

The next stage Sammy comes through is the Warrior. The warrior is the relatively simple character from all the ways of their thought patterns, seeking simply to win whatever confronts them. Their challenge is to bring meaning to what they do, which they do using courage and the warrior’s discipline. Sammy quits his job using the girls merely as an excuse to get out.His final journey to manhood is a short one, He looks around for his girls and notices that they have already left, but he knew that was a futile cause to begin with. He steps outside to see the world and its opportunities as well as its responsibilities in front of him. Although, Sammy could see “how hard the world would be hereafter,” he knew that what was done had to be done.

In hindsight, Sammy still knew he had done the right thing as shown by “Now here comes the sad part of the story… but I don’t think it’s so sad myself. (updike) The orphan is the abandon child, fearing as a lost soul, seeks to once again feel the comfort of the mothers’ womb. Sammy becomes the orphan in the story when he gets fired for sticking up for the girls, Queenie, Big Tall Goony Goony and Plaid, Sammy has stood up to his boss Lengel . Lastly the sage, The Sage is a seeker after truth and enlightenment and journeys far in search of the next golden nugget of knowledge.

The danger for the sage and their deep fear is that their hard-won wisdom is built on the sand of falsehood.Their best hope is that they play from a position of objective honesty and learn to see with clarity that knows truth and untruth. Sammy now realizes how hard the . world is going to be and how harsh and cruel the world is when everything he had walks out. Nathan Hatcher felt that his quitting the job was a ridiculous and spontaneous decision: “Had he taken the time to think over his actions before he carried them out, he would have seen how foolish he was being and would not have gone through with them” (38).Yet Sammy’s frustration and inferiority complex had been building for a long time. Sammy had to act out and this was the perfect opportunity.

His lust for Queenie was not just physical — he wanted to be “of her kind,” and this was his chance. Sammy quits his job for reasons that run much deeper than impressing a couple of girls. He did not necessarily want Queenie, but instead, he wanted her way of living. Sammy admired and envied the girls for their social standing and that’s what he was after. ”(Christopher, Andrew).
