Most people do not recognize how harmful bottled water is for the environment. It is the main contributors to land pollution and gyres, which are islands of floating garbage, as big as BC! Disposable bottles are 1000 times more expensive than tap water. Disposable bottles can be recycled; however, not many people decide to recycle them. Limiting the use of disposable bottles will result in many benefits such as a cleaner environment. Disposable bottles are the main causes of land pollution.
Based on statistics, every year in BC, 130 million disposable bottles end up in landfills; imagine how many disposable bottles the whole world throws out! As stated by the Pacific Institute, to provide Americans with enough disposable bottles for one year, 17 million oil barrels are used! In the progress of making plastic bottles, factories produce pollutants. As a result of disposable bottles, gyres around the oceans are growing bigger every year. Landfills are also filled.

In spite of the fact that bottled water is recyclable, we should use reusable bottles instead. As a result, money will be saved and the environment will be cleaner. According to the University of Florida, only about 86% of 30 billion disposable water bottles sold in the US each year are recycled! It becomes weirder when we know 94% of the Americans have access to a plastics recycling center. Furthermore, not all plastic bottles sent to recycling centers are recycled because of the process of downcycling.
Downcycling is converting waste items into other poorer quality items. As you can see, bottled water is very expensive and has no difference to reusable water bottles. It is one of the contributors to global warming, landfills and gyres. Factories consume a lot of oil as raw materials to make plastic bottles. Although many people say disposable bottles can be recycled, they are usually down cycled. In conclusion, we should restrict the use of bottled water because it results in too many problems.
