Many short stories show women in different situations.
The women in “A Sorrowful Woman” and “The Story of an Hour” seek attention and feel restricted but in “A Rose for Emily” the protagonist seeks control. These stories relate in many ways but they differ in as well. The women in “A Sorrowful Woman” and “The Story of an Hour” have similar ideas of what they want. They feel the need to break free of their marriages and become independent. In “A Sorrowful Woman”, the protagonist keeps herself in a room so she can be alone. In “The Story of an Hour”, when Mrs.Mallard discovers her husband is dead she goes in a room and also wants to be left alone.

Even though they are in different situations, they both seek attention. The main characters of these stories were depressed because both spouses ignored their needs. In “The Story of and Hour”, Mrs. Mallard’s husband ignored her feelings and in “A Sorrowful Woman”, the husband ignored the fact that his wife was in need of serious help. By the end of the stories, the women share and abundance of emotions and die because it’s too much to handle. Although the women loved their husbands they felt restricted. Mrs.
Mallard’s husband was dominant so she didn’t have control over many things. In “A Sorrowful Woman”, the husband tends to the wife’s every need but she still feels trapped in her own mind. Both accepted their situations because the felt that was the only thing they could do. In both stories they imagined new beginnings and what life would be like without their families but then both thought of how things would be different if they didn’t have them. The women in these stories felt controlled and wanted to break free. However, in “A Rose for Emily”, the protagonist wanted control in her life because that is what she was use to.In “A Rose for Emily”, the main character was isolated from others where as the woman in “A Sorrowful Woman”, tried to keep herself isolated but her family kept her from doing so.
Emily wanted control in her life so she sought out a husband but when Mrs. Mallard was told that her husband had died she later felt a sense of independence. In “A Rose for Emily”, the main character refuses to change with the times but in “A Sorrowful Woman and “The Story of an Hour”, the main characters imagined new beginnings. A sense of control played a big role in all of these stories. They were just ortrayed in different ways. All of these women went through many emotions and they dealt with them in different ways. The women in “A Sorrowful Woman” and “The Story of an Hour” sought attention because of the situation with their families.
They also felt restricted because their husbands ignored their needs. In “A Rose for Emily”, Emily wanted control because that was what she was use to. These stories similarities and differences are very clear and show that even though all of them happened at different times and had many different situations they can always be brought back together.
