In some parts of the world, corporal punishment is still legal in some of school; including 20 of the States of the USA, but has been outlawed in other places, including Canada, Kenya, Japan, South Africa, New Zealand, and nearly all of Europe except the Czech Republic and France. As the creator of the future inhabitants of the earth, it is important for the teacher and parents to make sure that their students or children adopt the proper values and are set on the right path. However, sometimes the methods that they use to get their purpose – make disciplinary – is can be quite harrowing.

For instance, take corporal punishment. However, corporal punishment is not good for students in some reason. First, corporal punishment will influence student’s academic. Teacher very determining student’s academic. That is why teachers should be ‘friend’ who will be nice to them and be ‘parents’ who will teaches any lesson to them.

Teachers who do corporal punishment will be given epithet as “killers” by students. Their point of view will be worse when teachers who do corporal punishment, because they consider their teacher as a killer not as parents or friends anymore.

It will make them scare to the teacher and also degrade their concentration in the class. In the short term, corporal punishment is linked to poor learning outcomes. Students in Belize stated that they cannot learn when there is the threat of being whipped. Children victims of corporal punishment at school are also more likely to drop out of school. By degrade their concentration in the class, of course it will make them not focus and that which is influence their academic.

Moreover, a public school’s use of corporal punishment affects every student in that school, including those who are not personality subjected to hitting or paddling. The prevalent use of physical violence against student creates an overall threatening school atmosphere that impacts student’s ability to perform academically. Second, the violence action done by the teacher will be imitated by the students. As an educator figure, teacher is a person who give good example which will imitated by the students.

Student will imitate what they see around them. However, what will happen to the students if their teacher did violence action to them? For some students, they will imitate it and will do it to their friends. It will make them bad in attitude. Student who experience or witness physical violence will themselves develop disruptive and violent behaviors, further disturbing their classmates’ learning as well as their own. The bad attitude that imitated by the students from the teacher who do corporal punishment will be influence to their social life.

As we know, children who are in the school age often to imitate any action around them. They do not care whether it is good or not. They keep to imitating what they see, what they hear and what they feel. That is why parents and educator figure such as teacher should being a guide that will give guidance to them to do the right things. The education that will given by parents and teacher to the student or children can be formal and non – formal education. The formal education can be an education that student get from the school.

In this case, teacher has two functions as educator. Beside the teacher give formal education, the teacher can give non – formal education such as norm and moral value. Moreover, parents are the most figures who will teach non – formal education such as moral value to their children. Corporal punishment is not only done by the teacher at the school. It is possible also to be done by parents for make disciplinary to their children. Physical violence that children or student get from parents or teacher can be gives bad effect to the student or children in their social life.

They may not do the same thing like the teacher or their parents did to them at home, but they may do it to their friends or their sisters or brothers. For instance, beating a child into submission with anger will not have any benefits. If a child is beating, they know what they do makes their parent angry, but they will continue to do it behind their parent’s backs. While a light slap might correct their behavior because of its jolt-like effects, a beating will just make the child afraid of their parents, but it just a temporary. They are more prone to disconnect from them rather than listening and obeying.

A significant amount of research indicates that physical punishment is ineffective in parenting and teaching and learning process. Sometimes corporal punishment such as pinching or beating that they get from their parents or their teacher makes them to do same thing to their friends, their sisters or brothers. It will make their social life with their friends become worse and make their personality into naughty. In another word, corporal punishment that their parents or the teacher do is not makes them being disciplinary, but make them become misbehavior child.

So, it is not impossible for the students or children to imitating the corporal punishment that have done by their teacher or their parents and does it to their friends. Corporal punishment on the contrary tends to make children more violent and aggressive in later life. It may lead them to engage in antisocial behaviors and criminal activities. The antisocial behaviors of previously corporal punishment victims may crop from the aggressive attributes planted into the child by corporal punishment.

This deprives the child the opportunity to learn good relationship with other people, he will see aggression as the  only means to make his/her desires obliged to by other people, this will make him unfit in the society. Lack of internalization of moral may also lead the child into undesirable acts such as criminal activities, this is owing to the fact that he/she has not internalized the morals he/she was taught in childhood that criminal behavior is not good. These behaviors may see the child spent time behind bars in future. Third, corporal punishment will influence student’s mental growth.

When teacher do corporal punishment to their students such as pinching, beating their hands, and so on, it will influence for their mental. Child abuse can have destructive psychological and emotional impact on the child. Children who have been exposed to continuous corporal punishment have shown to develop the impacts of child abuse. Parents who subject their children to corporal punishment may therefore knowingly cause child abuse to their children due the aggression which is involved in disciplining the children through corporal punishment.

In other words corporal punishment may culminate into child abuse and thus it was better avoided. Sometimes, corporal punishment gives a pressure for students. They will be a coward, feel demeaned themselves, and has no self confidence because of that pressure. In this case, corporal punishment can be effect for student’s psychology. Psychology growth for school age children is very determined by their environment. Physical punishment puts children or students at risk for depression and anger management problems. Sometimes, corporal punishment gives a trauma for children.

For instance, when teacher mad at the student who is not pay attention in learning and teaching process and then teacher gives a physical punishment such as pinch and beat student’s hand by using ruler, it will be a trauma for some student. For student who has introvert personality, the trauma will make her/him afraid to the teacher who gives physical punishment to him/her. Every time she/he in learning and process with that teacher, it can make her/him feel worry, afraid, and it is possible also to make her/him hate to the teacher.

When parents and teachers use strict disciplinary measures such as corporal punishment, they do not teach the children benefits they will achieve by adopting the behaviors they wish them to. The child is only in fear that if him/she behaves in a certain way she will be punished. This fear is superficial; it does not go deep into the Child’s personality. Many students who have been subjected to hitting, paddling or other harsh disciplinary practices have reported subsequent problems with depression, fear, and anger.

However, for student who has extrovert personality, it can be doesn’t really matter for her/him. It may be not affect for their psychology, but it will be affect to their personality. In school age student, students will be imitating anything around them. Their environment is very determining their personality. Corporal punishment inflicts pain on the children or student. They will therefore show immediate compliance to the instruction of the parent or teacher due to the fear of the rod or spanking. This is a positive impact of corporal punishment is the wish of any discipliner on the child.

The disadvantage of it is that the immediate compliance is associated with conditioned reflex action created by the pain that this type of punishment inflicts. A child will comply even at the sight of his/her parent carrying a stick. This is because the cognitive of the child has been conditioned to comply by the pain of corporal punishment. However this short term compliance does not mean that the child has changed his/her ways. A child who is progressively subjected to corporal punishment develops low confidence and assertiveness in the future.

The child is made to believe that he/she can virtually do anything right. The pain impacted on the child makes him/her feel that he/she was totally wrong in doing whatever she did, he/she develops a feeling that she is never right or perfect in doing anything, such a child will be caught in a vicious cycle in trying to develop his/her personality, he/she is always of the feeling that his/her decisions will always be countered by her parent. This impairs the child in deciding on the best personality to take on Pattersons (2007).

Physically punishing a child teaches them that the adult is displeased, but it may not help them understand the reason for the displeasure. The distress and confusion caused by the punishment is unlikely to allow the child to reflect on his behavior. Some people still believe that corporal punishment is right, as they believe that they have the best interest for children in their minds. It is believed that corporal punishment helps children to know the difference between right and wrong therefore was made for children who misbehaved.

Punishment in schools might be seen as an educational purpose, as teachers see their students daily and know their behaviors. Jones (2000) declares that spanking or similar actions can be an effective punishment and deterrent for childish misbehavior. Other reasons supporting corporal punishment are little cost, meaning everyone can afford it. It is quick and therefore everyone can resume to their duties. However, corporal punishment is torturing for a child and makes them to be afraid of another person especially an adult, which is supposed to be one that takes care of youngsters.

It may not torture them physically, but indirectly it will torture their psychology. It is the nature of the child that determines which is best to use. For a parent with a sensitive child, a harsh word is often enough, but for the parents of a strong willed child, sometimes a swift spank is effective. It is not the punishment that is good or bad. The usefulness lies in consistency, gentleness and reasonableness of the method. The pressure or trauma that they feel will make they lose trust in the adults who administer the beating; they learn that force is an acceptable factor in human interaction.

Somehow, corporal punishment is psychologically damaging. Redirection, discipline or punishment must include an explanation of why a behavior is unacceptable and what behavior is expected. Many times a child or student’s misbehavior is a mistake in judgment. The parents or teacher need to apply this same rule to children. They must curb their anger and allow time to think about what we want to teach. As the observed by Zambia’s Human Rights Commission director, Enoch Mulembe, corporal punishment is an evil. Muelembe said, “Disciplining children by corporal punishment and other inhuman ways is evil.

We should encourage non-violent ways of discipline because corporal punishment has proved to be destructive”. So, corporal punishment is not good for students in many sides. Childhood is not only a long journey but also a delicate part of one’s life because it is the time when one’s personality is molded into what they become later in life. There are still many ways to make students discipline without do violence action like corporal punishment. For instance, in parenting, the effective discipline helps a child develop self-control by teaching, guiding, modeling and explaining what is wrong and what to do instead.

Effective discipline starts with our attitudes about children and their behavior. In another word, to teach them the right things is also by using the right ways. Somehow, corporal punishment actually will give more bad influence for students or children. The rightness of physical safety and protection extends to adults, prisoners, and soldiers under the law. The most vulnerable among us are students and children. They must have that same rightness. Corporal punishment is therefore not needed in disciplining children. Its negative impacts are felt more in the long run.
