Crooks takes one look out the the little window and hears cries of Joy and laughter as the evening games commence. In John Steinbeck’s Of Mice and Men Crooks comes off as a mean old man, bus considering his conditions, it is not surprising. Crooks is forced to sleep in a tiny room that smells of fresh manure. Crooks thinks he knows his place In life. He knows that he Is racially different and that the whites look down upon him. unlike a lot of other people, Crooks accepts himself as an inferior person, which he is not. Crooks has very low self-esteem. If Crooks were to stand up for himself maybe he would get off the ranch sooner and find his own land.
Crooks gets beat-up physically and mentally on the ranch. Crooks has a crooked back, which is where he got his name from, but he mainly gets put down from Curleys wife. Curley’s wife calls him bad names and puts him down, but Crooks doesnt stand up for himself. Crooks needs to get a lot more courage and walk himself off this ranch. It Is sad that Crooks has to deal with all the hateful and terrible ways of this time. He has to take care of his back, he has to deal with racial inequality, and he has a disgusting room. Crooks will most likely die on that ranch unless he stands up for himself.
