Culture revolves around dance through movement, each telling their own unique stories. Dance is the center piece for many society_ ” Dance Is defined as an art performed by individuals or groups of human beings, existing in time, space, force, and flow, in which the human body is the instrument, and movement is the medium” (Krause, 24)1. As many cultures differ from one another dance is one way universally they are able to communicate. Through their bodies they are able to speak to one another.

Dance has been around a very long time. When you typically think of America you wouldn’t normally think of dance. You tend to think more Industrial revolution and technology, but if you look back through American history names such as Elvis Presley, Chubby Checker, and the Battles have all contributed a great amount to give our country the name America. Dance Is the blueprint for civilizations describing how they do things, their values, and beliefs. Dance had an enormous impact during America during the sass’s through the sass’s. Many different types of dance were being Introduced during these times because of all of the quick fads people were going through. In the end dance has shaped the resonantly of American culture forever.

Starting with the sass’s America was going through the adolescent kids from the baby boomers. These kids tended to be very outgoing and were not afraid of new things going on around them. They were up for the new upcoming fads. This was a good thing because through the ass’s there were hundreds of new dances being introduced into America. Dance was on the up rise and brought a new light into people’s eyes. A popular artist by the name of Chubby Checker was a big hit during this decade. He Introduced a lot of new music, but the biggest hit was his new erosion of the song called the “Twist”.

It was a very simple dance and that’s what made it popular. Everyone could do it; it was as simple as placing one foot forward and twisting then repeating. This era of dance was letting people enjoy dance without the worry of having someone else to dance with. It allowed people to dance by themselves, no touching was required. That Is one of the reasons I believe that It was so popular. Later into the ass’s Americas interests were expanding into other types of dance.Into the sass’s people started the rein of Disco and Punk.

Both of these types of once were black and white from each other. People’s Interests were changing and not everyone like the same thing. Disco was very elaborate, bright colors, sexy, and upbeat. Punk was the aggressive, dark colored theme, and had a bad ass type of vibe. Along with the punk type of music came dancing called “Noshing” and “Pogo”. Noshing consisted of a lot of head banging, flinging your body all around with violent movements in small or large groups. Their intentions were not to hurt people but sometimes things would happen and kids would get injured.

Pogo was just standing n one place and Jumping up and down waving your hands up and down. This fad only lasted for a while and new Ideas and trends starting emerging. The SASS was a time when America was prospering. New inventions such as tape recorders, Vic’s, and even cable television were being introduced. One of the 1 OFF the biggest impacts of the ass’s. It helped get people’s interests in fashion, music, and dance all out to the general public. It was a new revolution that was starting for the world of music and dance.

Big named stars such as Michael Jackson and Madonna were on MET.They were big influences on helping create new dance styles of the ass’s. One of the biggest dance crazes of the ass’s was break dancing. It was Just moving your body no rhyme or rhythm. You usually had to be physically fit because of all of the movements required tremendous amounts of strength to be able to hold yourself up. This only lasted for some time, then once again peoples interests starting shifting and new fads were emerging. The sass’s became the time of quick fads and a lot of different styles.

If people were going too party they didn’t Just have one option clothes wise to wear. They could dress bright, casual, or even dress like Run DIM with the pants way too big for them and a baggy shirt. All of these styles were in. MAC Hammer was a big name hip-hop star in the ass’s with one of his biggest hits called “U can’t touch this”. This was a very popular song and millions of copies were being sold by the day. The hammer time dance was a dance that stuck out in the ass’s. It was an upbeat hip-hop dance, Just moving to the music.

Hip-hop was starting and people quickly picked up on the catchy up beat tempo. Hip-hop has been has never really died out and is still going today.Looking back throughout American history our culture is never satisfied with what they have. It’s Just the American culture way of life. Our culture changes so much as you can tell through the last 40 years of dance alone. I’m an American but I would consider myself an outsider to all of this. I have heard about all of these dances and fads but have never really attempted any in an organized way.

I think when someone looks back throughout American history dance is one of the biggest ways to tell what was going on. It allowed people to express themselves in ways they might not be able to put into words. It is important teach the basic principles of dance to generation to generation so our traditions and way we live carry on. Thomas K. Haggard said it very well “While dance education is essentially of a singular nature-?about teaching in and through movement that is rhythmically organized (to one degree or another), aesthetically orientated, and tied in to training the body in the “Do’s” and “Don’t” of cultural signing-?the was in which dance is taught, thought of, dealt with, and passed on vary greatly (culture to culture, program to program, teacher to teacher, and student to student) (Haggard, 245-246)2.Passing on these traditions is essential for the survival of America. Expression of dance has definitely shaped America.

Dance is the way of life for cultures. Without dance America would not have been the same place as it is today. Through the movement of dance, outsiders to our society are able to understand basic concepts of America. It shows the development of our civilization like a timeline. Dance will never die. I would consider it one of the main focal points for many cultures. People’s interests are always changing and so will dance, this is what makes are culture continue to move on and grow.
