Determining Empirical Formula Purpose: use mass relationships to show that magnesium and oxygen combine whole-number ratio by mass. Materials: As stated in lab manual Methods: As stated In lab manual Data/Analysls Mgo The purpose of the lab was to use mass relationships to show that magnesium and oxygen combine whole-number ratio by mass.

In the lab students were to cut ne centimeter pieces of Magnesium and use a crucible, and Bunsen burner to heat up the pieces of magnesium sulfate. Then use a balance to determine the mass. After heating the sample of magnesium sulfate the mass decreased, It also turned into a vapor. The odor of the vapor smelled Ilke ammonia. To find the mass of magnesium used, subtract the mass of magnesium and crucible from the mass of the empty crucible. To find the mass of oxygen that reacted, subtract the mass of the rucible and oxide from mass of crucible and magnesium.

To find the number of moles of magnesium used divide the mass of magnesium by 24g of magnesium/ moles of magnesium. Finally find the number of moles that reacted divide mass of O in grams by 16 grams O/mole O. The mass of magnesium was . 47g, the mass of oxygen that reacted was 31 g, the number of moles of magnesium was 0. 020, the number of moles of O that reacted was 0. 019 and the ratio of moles of Mg to moles of O is MgO. The percent error was only. l%.
