How Poetry Comes to Me

It comes drop the balling over the

Boulders at dark, it stays

Frightened outside the

Scope of my campfire

I go to run into it at the

Edge of the visible radiation

Beginning

For All

Ah to be alive

on a mid-September forenoon

fording a watercourse

barefoot, bloomerss rolled up,

keeping boots, battalion on,

sunlight, ice in the shoals,

northern Rockiess.

Rustle and play of icy brook Waterss

rocks turn underfoot, little and difficult as toes

cold olfactory organ dripping

singing inside

creek music, bosom music,

odor of Sun on crushed rock.

I pledge commitment

I pledge commitment to the dirt

of Turtle Island,

and to the existences who thereon dwell

one ecosystem

in diverseness

under the Sun

With joyful interpenetration for all.

Hay for the Horses

He had driven half the dark

From far down San Joaquin

Through Mariposa, up the

Dangerous Mountain roads,

And pulled in at eight a.m.

With his large truckload of hay

behind the barn.

With windlass and ropes and maulerss

We stacked the bales up clean

To splintery redwood balks

High in the dark, bits of lucerne

Twirling through shingle-cracks of visible radiation,

Scabies of haydust in the

sweaty shirt and places.

At lunchtime under Black oak

Out in the hot cow pen,

& # 8212 ; The old female horse intruding lunchpails,

Grasshoppers crepitating in the weeds & # 8212 ;

“ I & # 8217 ; m 68 ” he said,

“ I foremost bucked hay when I was 17.

I thought, that twenty-four hours I started,

I sure would detest to make this all my life.

And dammit, that & # 8217 ; s merely what

I & # 8217 ; ve gone and done. ”

Old Boness

Out at that place walking unit of ammunition, looking out for nutrient,

a rhizome, a birdsong, a seed that you can check

plucking, excavation, traping, snagging,

hardly acquiring by,

no nutrient out at that place on dust-covered inclines of scree & # 8212 ;

transport some & # 8212 ; expression for some,

travel for a hungry dream.

Deer bone, Dall sheep,

castanetss hunger place.

Out at that place someplace

a shrine for the old 1s,

the dust of the old castanetss,

old vocals and narratives.

What we ate & # 8212 ; who ate what & # 8212 ;

how we all prevailed.

Kisiabaton

Beat-up datsun idleness in the route

scintillas of fog

almost-vertical hillsides bead off

immense stumps melting into mist

soft warm rain

Snaggy, forked and distributing tops, a temperate cloud-forest tree

Chamaecyparis formosiana & # 8211 ;

Taiwan hinoki,

hung-kuai ruddy cypress

That the tribal people call kisiabaton

this rare old tree

is what we came to see.

At Tower Peak

Every sunburn turn overing hayfield will turn into lodging

Expresswaies are clogged all twenty-four hours

Academies packed with bookmans composing documents

City people thin and dark

This land most existent

As its western-tending aureate inclines

And bird-entangled cardinal vale swamps

Sea-lion, urchin seashores

Southerly salmon-probes

Into the aromatic almost-Mexican hills

Along a scope of granite extremums

The names forgotten,

An due east running river that ends out in desert

The come offing ground-squirrels in the tumbled blocks

The rubric of glacier shade on slab

Where we wake refreshed from 10 hours sleep

After a long twenty-four hours & # 8217 ; s walking

Packing loads to the snow

Aftermath to the same old universe of no names,

No things, new as of all time, stone and H2O,

Cool morning birdsongs, high jet condensation trails.

A twenty-four hours or two or million, take a breathing

A few stairss back from what goes down

In the current kingdom.

A sort of ice age, distributing, make fulling vales

Shaving dirts, paving Fieldss, you can walk in it

Live in it, drive through it so

It melts off

For whatever sprouts

After the age of

Frozen Black Marias. Flesh-carved stone

And blasts on the acme,

Smoke from wood fires is white,

The haze above the distant Virginia

lley like a twilight.

It & # 8217 ; s merely one universe, this spinal column of stone and watercourses

And snow, and the wash of crushed rocks, silts

Littorals, bunch grasss, saltbrush, bee-fields,

Twenty million human people, downstream, here below.

Smokey the Bear Sutra

Once in the Jurassic about 150 million old ages ago,

the Great Sun Buddha in this corner of the Infinite

Void gave a Discourse to all the assembled elements

and energies: to the standing existences, the walking existences,

the flying existences, and the sitting existences & # 8212 ; even grasses,

to the figure of 13 billion, each one born from a

seed, assembled there: a Discourse concerning

Enlightenment on the planet Earth.

“ In some future clip, there will be a continent called

America. It will hold great centres of power called

such as Pyramid Lake, Walden Pond, Mt. Rainier, Big Sur,

Everglades, and so forth ; and powerful nervousnesss and channels

such as Columbia River, Mississippi River, and Grand Canyon

The human race in that epoch will acquire into problems all over

its caput, and practically bust up everything in malice of

its ain strong intelligent Buddha-nature. ”

“ The distortion strata of the great mountains and the pulsations

of vents are my love firing deep in the Earth.

My stubborn compassion is schist and basalt and

granite, to be mountains, to convey down the rain. In that

future American Era I shall come in a new signifier ; to bring around

the universe of loveless cognition that seeks with unsighted hungriness:

and mindless fury eating nutrient that will non make full it. ”

And he showed himself in his true signifier of

SMOKEY THE BEAR

A fine-looking smokey-colored brown bear standing on his hind legs, demoing

that he is aroused and

watchful.

Bearing in his right paw the Shovel that digs to the truth beneath

visual aspects ; cuts the roots of useless

attach- ments, and cracks damp sand on the fires of greed and war ;

His left paw in the Mudra of Comradely Display & # 8212 ; bespeaking that all

animals have the full right to populate to

their bounds and that cervid, coneies, chipmunks, serpents, blowballs, and lizards all grow

in the kingdom of the

Dharma ;

Wearing the bluish work overalls symbolic of slaves and labourers, the

infinite work forces oppressed by a

civilisation that claims to salvage but frequently destroys ;

Wearing the broad-brimmed chapeau of the West, symbolic of the forces that

guard the Wilderness, which is the

Natural State of the Dharma and the True Path of adult male on Earth: all true waies lead through

mountains & # 8212 ;

With a aura of fume and fire behind, the forest fires of the

kali-yuga, fires caused by the stupidity of

those who think things can be gained and lost whereas in truth all is contained huge and

free in the Blue Sky

and Green Earth of One Mind ;

Round-bellied to demo his sort nature and that the great Earth has nutrient

plenty for everyone who loves her

and trusts her ;

Treading underfoot uneconomical expresswaies and gratuitous suburbs ; nailing the

worms of capitalist economy and

dictatorship ;

Bespeaking the Undertaking: his followings, going free of autos, houses,

canned nutrients, universities, and places ;

maestro the Three Mysteries of their ain Body, Speech, and Mind ; and dauntlessly chop down

the rotten

trees and snip out the ill limbs of this state America and so fire the remnant

rubbish.

Wrathful but Calm. Austere but Comic. Smokey the Bear will

Illuminate those who would assist him ; but for those who would impede or

slander him,

HE WILL Put THEM OUT.

Therefore his great Mantra:

Namah samanta vajranam chanda maharoshana

Sphataya busyness traks ham nam

“ I DEDICATE MYSELF TO THE UNIVERSAL DIAMOND

Be THIS RAGING FURY DESTROYED ”

And he will protect those who love forests and rivers,

Supreme beings and animate beings, tramps and lunatics, captives and vomit

people, instrumentalists, playful adult females, and hopeful kids:

And if anyone is threatened by advertisement, air pollution, telecasting,

or the constabulary, they should intone SMOKEY THE BEAR & # 8217 ; S WAR SPELL:

DROWN THEIR BUTTS

CRUSH THEIR BUTTS

DROWN THEIR BUTTS

CRUSH THEIR BUTTS

And SMOKEY THE BEAR will certainly look to set the enemy out

with his vajra-shovel.

Now those who recite this Sutra and so seek to set it in pattern willl

accumulate virtue every bit countless as the

littorals of Arizona and Nevada.

Will assist salvage the planet Earth from entire oil slipperiness.

Will come in the age of harmoniousness of adult male and nature.

Will win the stamp love and caresses of work forces, adult females, and animals.

Will ever hold mature blackberries to eat and a cheery topographic point under a pine

tree to sit at.

AND IN THE END WILL WIN HIGHEST PERFECT ENLIGHTENMENT.

therefore have we heard.
