“Visa International is a bank-sponsored consortium that oversees the global activities of what is now the world’s largest consumer card payment system. Member banks are charged quarterly service fees based on the amount of charge volume their cards generate: 1.38% for the first five years that a bank belongs and then 0.69% thereafter. Visa won’t reveal what this adds up to in total revenues worldwide, but it could be well over $500 million, much of which gets plowed back into high-profile marketing campaigns, product development and computer maintenance.”
