No one knew what was going on and no one knew if they should knock on the door and ask. | “But with every word she was drawing further and further into herself, so he gave that up, and only the dead dream fought on as the afternoon slipped away, trying to touch what was no longer tangible, struggling unhappily, undespairingly, toward that lose voice across the room. ”| This quote expresses how Gatsby is kind of annoyed of how Daisy only cares for her self and doesn’t care for anyone else. He is hating on how selfish she is being lately. It’s making Gatsby realize that she is not what he expected her to be.
He expected to be a perfect little angel and she is showing him that she is not even close to that at all and he is getting annoyed and its’ making Gatsby not like her as much anymore. Daisy is making her self look so bad to Gatsby and Gatsby is saying “But with every word she was drawing further and further unto herself, so he gave that up…”. He is starting to realize what her flaws are and he’s not liking them what so ever. | “They weren’t happy, and neither of them had touched the chicken or the ale—and yet they weren’t unhappy either.
There was an unmistakable air of natural intimacy about the picture, and anybody would have said that they were conspiring together. ”| In this quote, the two characters are showing that they are acting in the same manner. They both didn’t really feel any emotion at all. Like it said “ they weren’t happy…. and yet they weren’t unhappy either”. They both showed that they both feel the exact same way. It makes that two character sounds perfect for each other and that they are meant to be together. It also shows that the two character don’t really know exactly how each other is feeling.
There are definitely mixed feelings and signals going around. | “He had intended, probably, to take what he could and go—but now he found that he had committed himself to the following of a grail. ” | | “’They are a rotten crowd,’ I shouted across the lawn. ‘You’re worth the whole damn bunch put together. ’ I’ve always been glad I said that. It was the only compliment I ever gave him, because of him from beginning to end. ” | This quote is expressing that everyone is being rude to Gatsby and everyone is treating him like he is a little kid and he can’t be helped.
They keep telling him that Daisy won’t leave Tom for him but Gatsby doesn’t listen to any of them and he is being stubborn. He think that Daisy will come to him in the blink of an eye. But that’s not the case and when everyone tells him that, he starts to get angry and he starts to argue and hates on everyone else. | “West Egg, especially, still figures in my more fantastic dreams. I see it as a night scene by El Greco: a hundred houses, at once conventional and grotesque, crouching under a sullen, overhanging sky and lusterless moon. ” | In this quote, Nick describes West Egg to be the best place to live ever.
He makes it sounds so nice and clean and well made. Like when he says “…still figures in my more fantastic dreams. ” He makes it sounds so beautiful and he makes it sound like all the rich people live there, and if you live anywhere else, you are unworthy and poor. Your are especially poor if you live in the East Egg, or in the Valley of Ashes. | “’You said a bad driver was only safe until she met another bad driver? Well, I met another bad driver, didn’t I? I mean it was careless of me to make such a wrong guess. I thought you were rather an honest, straightforward person.
I thought it was your secret pride. ”| My interpretation of this quote is that Daisy is saying that she isn’t considered a bad driver unless she has come in contact with someone else who is a bad driver. Even though she was the one who hit Mrytle Wilson, she still think it’s not her fault and that she isn’t the bad driver. Daisy thinks it was that the other cars fault as well. It shows that when it says “I met another bad driver didn’t I? ”. when she said that she meant it as in she wasn’t the bad driver and it wasn’t her fault she crashed.
She was blaming it on the other driver and she meant as if the other driver didn’t swerve then she would of swerved either. She is just being really selfish and she won’t step up and take the blame. | “It was all very careless and confused. They were careless people, Tom and Daisy—they smashed up things and creatures and then retreated back into their money or their vast carelessness, or whatever it was that kept them together, and let other people clean up the mess they had made…”| This quote is basically saying that Nick and Daisy did bad things together and they were horrible people.
It basically said they caused a lot of drama and then made other people deal with it other than them. Like when it said “…Let other people clean up the mess for them.. ”. it just shows what mean people they are and how they don’t care for anyone else but themselves. They are very selfish people. | “…until gradually I became aware of the old island here that flowered once for Dutch sailors’ eyes—a fresh, green breast of the new world. It vanished trees…had once pandered in whispers to the last and greatest of all human dreams; for a transitory enchanted moment man must ave held his breath in the presence of this continent, compelled into and aesthetic contemplation he neither understood nor desired, face to face for the last time in history with something commensurate to his capacity for wonder…
