Heavy Metal

5 May 2017

Good morning to our lecturer and my fellow friends. Today, I’m going to inform you about my favourite music genre, the heavy metal or metal. I’ll talk about its origin, characteristics and its evolvement. I am pretty sure that all of you are not fans of heavy metal. Perhaps, some of you did not even heard of it. Heavvy metal , often referred to as metal , is a genre of rock music that developed in the late 1960s and early 1970s with roots in blues rock and psychedelic rock. Heavvy metal lyrics and performance styles are often associated with masculinity, aggression and machismo.

Heavvy metal is one of the most misunderstood genres of music in our day. Rather unfortunately, this is often a result of brazen ignorance about the subject, brought about by certain sectors of the media and society but still metal has outlasted many other rock genres. Heavvy metal started its origin in the late 1960s and early 1970s.

Led Zeppelin and Black Sabbath have been considered as the pioneer of heavy metal music. Heavvy metal acts always attracted large audiences, though they were often derided by critics, a status common throughout the history of heavy metal music.

In the mid-1970s Judas Priest helped spur the genre’s evolution by discarding much of its blues influence. Motorhead in the other hand introduced a punk rock sensibility and an increasing emphasis on speed. Bands in the New Wave of British Heavvy Metal such as Iron Maiden and Saxon followed in a similar vein. Before the end of the decade, heavy metal fans became known as “metalheads” or “headbangers”. Heavvy metal is traditionally characterized by loud distorted guitars, emphatic rhythms, dense bass-and-drum sound, and vigorous vocals.

The electric guitar and the sonic ower that it projects through amplification has historically been the key element in heavy metal. The essence of metal drumming is creating a loud, constant beat for the band.. The prominent role of the bass is also key to the metal sound as it provides the low-end sound crucial to making the music “heavy”. For certain artists and bands, visual imagery plays a large role in heavy metal. In addition to its sound and lyrics, a heavy metal band’s “image” is expressed in album sleeve art, logos, stage sets, clothing, and music videos while some have outrageous performance personas and tage shows.

Many subgenres of heavy metal developed outside of the commercial mainstream during the 1980s. These subgenres include thrash metal, death metal and power metal. Thrash metal is the most notable as it was popularized by the “Big Four” which are Metallica, Anthrax, Megadeth, and Slayer. In the mid- and late 1990s came a new wave of U. S. metal groups inspired by the alternative metal bands and their mix of genres. Dubbed as the “nu- metal”, bands such as Slipknot, Linkin Park, Limp Bizkit, Papa Roach, P. O. D. , Korn and Disturbed are the most notable bands that nspired by this genre.

In the mid-late 2000s,metalcore,a hybrid of extreme metal and hardcore punk, emerge as commercial force. Avenged Sevenfold, Bullet For My Valentine and Trivium are among the worldwide popular bands that carry the influence of ‘metalcore’ in their music. As a conclusion, heavy metal is one of the genres that has vast followers worldwide thanks to the pioneers and other bands that emerged later which help in the evoluton of this genre from blues rock origin to the recent ‘metalcore’.
