The skull, located on top of the shoulders, houses one brain. However, the brain is built up of two distinct hemispheres: the left and right. Of course knowing this information always arises questions. Questions that arise are: wondering if one is left or right brain dominant, how one can tell which side of the brain they use to learn, and if these characteristics would be something that could be inherited? According to Boddy-Evans (n.d.), While we have a natural tendency towards one way of thinking, the two sides of our brain work together in our everyday lives. (Boddy-Evans, n.d.) Over the centuries, many different psychologists have proposed that the brain functions in many different ways. Many have conducted extensive research regarding the topic. Some psychologists would consider that the left and right sides of the brain works with one other and that one could not function without the assistance of the other.

Cherry stated, “Some general traits that would be known to be associated with the right side of the brain include: recognizing faces, expressing emotions, music, reading emotions, color, images, intuition, and creativity.” (Cherry, n.d.) But she did not offer an explanation as to why. From knowing this minimal information about the right brain, one might start to think that they would learn best from visual experiences and are more productive by completing tasks “hands on.” On the contrary, the left-brain is to consist of strategically thought tasks, analytical thinking and most importantly language. Cherry’s (n.d.) study found the following: The left-brain is better known for: language, logic, critical thinking, numbers, and reasoning. (Cherry, n.d.) If one finds themselves to remember information from reading a book or from hearing a lecture, they could suspect they are a left-brain learner.

This theory could also mean that the one in question is very responsive to learning new information and can recall information after the first time of being introduced to the subject. Each person is different and will learn according to their level of comfort with the subject. These are just theories, and there is no right or wrong

way in how a person learns, just as long as they are learning the materials presented. The brain holds many features, each residing in either the left-brain or right brain. Boddy-Evans stated, “The focus of the left-brain is verbal, processing information in an analytical and sequential way, looking first at the pieces then putting them together to get the whole.” (Boddy-Evans, n.d.)

A few of the other characteristics that the left side is known for would be; verbal, focusing on words, symbols, numbers, analytical, led by logic, process ideas sequentially, step by step, words used to remember things, remember names rather than faces, make logical deductions from information. (Boddy-Evans, n.d.) The right side of the brain focuses on the visual, and processes information in an intuitive and simultaneous way, looking first at the whole picture then the details. (Boddy-Evans, n.d.) Boddy-Evans also specified, “A few of the characteristics that the right side is known for include; visual, focusing on images, patterns intuitive, led by feelings, process ideas simultaneously, make lateral connections from information, see the whole first, then the details, organization tends to be lacking.” (Boddy-Evans, n.d.) Roger Sperry (who won the Nobel prize in 1981) and Michael Gazzaniga are two neuroscientists who studied patients who had surgery to cut the corpus callosum. (Chudler, 2011) In their experiments on the patients, they cut the corpus callosum.

According to Bailey (n.d.) “The corpus callosum is a thick band of nerve fibers that divides the cerebrum into left and right hemispheres. It connects the left and right sides of the brain allowing for communication between both hemispheres.” (Bailey, n.d.) Sperry stated, “After surgery, they closely observed the patients and they appeared to be “normal” – they could walk, read, talk, play sports and do all the everyday things they did before surgery.” (Chudler, 2011) The problems that arose were that objects presented to the right hand and eye could name the item presented, but could not name the function of the object.

(Chudler, 2011) When that same object was presented to the left hand and eye, it could name the object’s use but was unable to name the object’s name. (Chudler, 2011) Thus, strengthening the fact that the brain operates hand in hand with the two hemispheres. Some people are convinced that the brain can operate without its opposite side being completely connected, but the two hemispheres can still function properly without each other just not efficiently.

So, is there a difference in efficiency of either side of the brain that affects leading and leadership role? From public official to managers, farmers and the President of the United States every single one of them have a distinctive leadership styles that can be categorized by either the right or left-brain. Leaders nowadays occur after being strategically picked and each person is unique, just like their leading style.

When leading from the right brain, behaviors are strategic, innovative, transformational, and engaging. (Décosterd, 2010) When leading from the left, behaviors are methodical, expressive, grounded, and assertive. (Décosterd, 2010) Few have a talent to in which they can lead with their whole brain depending on who the audience is and how well they can relay the message, for example public officials or the President. Lastly there are few more behaviors that the brain leads from. Resilient and savvy, otherwise known as auxiliary behaviors.

They are right- and left-brain enhancing, supporting your leadership ability by tending to you personally. (Décosterd, 2010) If one leads to be savvy, he or she represents their image by negotiating skills. However if they are resilient, one contributes to ones wellbeing and health. How would a person answer the question, does the right side and the left side of the brain affect learning? It would have to depend on the subject a person is trying to learn. From reading this paper, a person would have learned the differences, functions, and characteristics between the left and right sides of the brain.

There should never be a set side of the brain to learn from; it all comes down to the subject at hand and how relevant it is to the person learning the subject. All in all, the brain is an extremely important and effective part of a human. Being left or right-brained dominant does make a difference in a person’s life and does affect the way a person learns.
