How Hate Caused Major Events in Romeo and Juliet
I hate the word, As I hate hell, all Montagues, and thee. Have at thee, coward! ” Here Tybalt lets Benvolio know how much he hates him as well as his entire family, the Montagues. This leads them to fight. Another example of what happens later on that night, when Romeo, Benvolio and Mercutio agree on assisting the Capulet party; Romeo wanders off and finds Juliet. Not knowing Tybalt was near him starts to describe Juliet. Tybalt says in Act I, scene v, “This, by his voice, should be a Montague. (to his PAGE) Fetch me my rapier, boy. What, dares the slave, Come hither, covered with an antic face, To fleer and scorn at our solemnity? Now, by the stock and honor of my kin, To strike him dead I hold it not a sin. ” Angered by Romeo’s presence, he wants to kill him. Lord Capulet’s forbid Tybalt of causing a fight and Tybalt leaves saying to himself he will have Romeo pay for what he has done. (Act I, scene v) In Act III, scene I, after Tybalt kills Mercutio and then Romeo kills Tybalt, Prince Escalus asks Benvolio who started the fight and he says it was Tybalt.
As to why Lady Capulet says, “He is a kinsman to the Montague. Affection makes him false. He speaks not true. Some twenty of them fought in this black strife, And all those twenty could but kill one life. I beg for justice, which thou, Prince, must give. Romeo slew Tybalt. Romeo must not live. Lady Capulet directly assumes the Montagues are responsible for Tybalt’s death. Just because Romeo is a Montague, having Tybalt started the fight or not, she wouldn’t mind as long as her enemies pay the price for their actions.
In simple terms, every time a Montague and a Capulet got near each other, one of them drew their sword first and there would always end up being a fight. The hate between these two families is so strong that it can actually take a few seconds for a fight to start between them. In the end of the play, after Romeo and Juliet commit suicide, both families come together and see their children dead and Prince Escalus says in Act V, scene iii, “This letter doth Make good the friar’s words, their course of love, the tidings of her death.
And here he writes that he did buy a poison, of a poor ‘apothecary, and therewithal, Came to this vault to die and lie with Juliet. Where be these enemies? —Capulet! Montague! See what a scourge is laid upon your hate, that heaven finds means to kill your joys with love! And I, for winking at your discords, too, have lost a brace of kinsmen. All are punished. ” The Prince has both Montague and Capulet see what their rivalry has caused to both their families as well as himself. He lost two kinsmen, Mercutio and Paris. This ends the feud between the two families.
Why is hate such a destructive force? What has hate caused between people in this world? Because of hate there have been wars, like World War I and II. Terrorism is another form of hate. Violent acts because a country wants to prove to be better than others, or for other unreasonable problems. One act of hate gets retaliated, another act of hate takes place and vice versa. Discrimination is another form of hate. Someone’s skin color doesn’t mean they will do something wrong. The world could become a better place if there weren’t hate. Together we can take action and stop this worldwide problem.
