This course has completely different approaches that any other courses I have taken so far. When I signed up for the course, I did not expect to have this load of work. This course has much more work than other courses which is great. Learning how to handle too much workload is obviously valuable skill everyone must have. If we could not handle too much workload for a single course, then we would not survive in any workplace. What I learned in this course is going to help me in my future.

I have learned many different skills that I am going to need when working in groups or with different background people. I learned how to identify different types of people. In true colors, there different ways of how to deal with people based on their true colors. Knowing how to approach people differently is a very important skill that can save anyone from having conflicts. I also learned the five dysfunctions of a team. Moreover, I learned what they cause if they exist in a team. More importantly, I learned how to overcome them when they exist.

The five dysfunctions are the main issues that a team must be aware of. They can destroy any team success. The first dysfunction is an absence of trust between members of a team. It is very important to have trust established among team members in order to success. Absence of trust leads to the second dysfunction which is fear of conflict. Fear of conflict makes team discussion boring. It is like no one wants to challenge others ideas. If fear of conflict exists among team members, the third dysfunction will exist as well.

Lack of commitment is the third dysfunction. The forth dysfunction (avoidance of accountability) is caused when lack of commitment occurs within a team. Finally, inattention to results is the fifth dysfunction that occurs when team members thinks individually. This course has taught these five dysfunctions and how to avoid them from happing within a team. Besides, I have learned many skills that these skills are going to help me in my future. More importantly, my team (the seven dwarves) has also taught many different things.

Also, through numerous group meetings, chapters’ readings and class activities I learned how to mingle with different people and respond to open discussion. When I think of the way of education in my country, I always compare the experience that I have been through in Thompson Rivers University. In my country, I rarely had teamwork in all the classes. I always had individual assignments. In Canada, I was introduced to the importance of teamwork. Now, I have a clear idea on how to appreciate working with others. Being involved in teamwork has always been challenging for me.

However, I feel that I am always helping my team to accomplish its goals and tasks. Teamwork is a concept that I am planning to apply it not only in workplace but also in my life. In showing our true colors, I learned that people behave differently based on their true colors. There are people who do things on time and have a plan for every task, while others get their tasks or assignments at the very last minute. It is amusing to observe different behavior from different people who happen to do the same task. For example, in one of my courses, I was with a group and we had a project to do.

One of the team members was not contributing to help the team members, while others were committed to the project. We asked him to do the easiest part of the project, yet, he had not done anything. Finally, we had to kick him out of the group. What I noticed during our meeting at that time that one of members did the part of the guy we kicked before kicking him out. That taught me not to count on anybody that not contributing to the team and to be ready for any emergency that might occur. Our teacher was aware of what was going on in all the teams at that course.

Why she did not say anything to help us with the issue (we asked). She said that she wanted us to solve our issue by ourselves, and to learn how face conflicts. Well, I really appreciated that she wanted us to be independent and not to ask for help for every issue that we might encounter in our lives. True colors have taught me how to identify different behaviours. True colors have four different colors. Each color has its own characteristics.

For example, blues are considered to be optimistic, passionate, caretaker and true romantic etc. unlike blues, greens are considered to be problem solver, very complex, intellectual, and driven by competence. Golds are considered to be efficient. They are said to be prepared, loves to plan, punctual, and well-organized. In contrast to golds, oranges characteristics are completely different. They are energetic, loves to change, playful, pushes boundaries, and “just do it”. Knowing these four colors and their characteristics can help people to communicate with each type appropriately. I learned through this course that there some skills in order to communicate with all the colors easily.

One of the skills is that I should pay attention to the behaviour and needs of someone. Also, I learned how to avoid generalizing. Understanding how to communicate with these colors will save me from stereotyping people. During this course, I have gained personal complements from my team mates. My team (the seven dwarves) and this course are the main reasons why I received these complements. After learning how to deal with the different colors, I have applied this skill during our meetings so far. My team members are willing to help each other.

Despite the fact that we are culturally different, we tried to find common interests and talk about them during meetings. The seven dwarves are consisted of two Canadians, two French, and two Saudis. This nice mixture has helped us to be more open in our discussion. During meetings, we have not discussed any topics that might create a conflict. We focused on our goals and had small friendly discussions. Also, we were open-minded and helpful. What I experienced during the meetings, everyone was willing to help others finishing their parts of the tasks. There was no member holding himself/herself back.

Everyone’s idea was appreciated and was taken into consideration. Then, we revised all the ideas and agreed on the ones that were included in our presentation. Finally, a group without norms can suffer and have dysfunctional members. During the course classes, I learned a lot of useful skills. I learned that when you show respect you get respect. Also, being in a class where there are lots of activities taught me many things. For example, we had some unexpected presentations that we told to do in the class. That taught me to be prepared for things that might happen that we are not aware of.

Also, there were presentations that I observed some bad attitudes towards the presenters. For example, some students a few students were not paying attention to the presenters. That also taught me a valuable thing. When you want to be listened to, you have to listen to others as well. Back to the true colors, true colors have some exceptions. For example, not necessary that all blues function as blues, there are blues who have combined characteristics. The same thing is for other colors. More importantly, true colors have things in common.

For example, blue and green have introspection in common. Also, blue and orange have human interaction in common. Blue and gold have cooperation and collaboration in common. These are what blue has in common with other colors. Green and gold has order and organization in common. Green and orange has independence in common. Finally, orange and gold have tangibles in common. Lack of commitment was our presentation. In this presentation, we learned how lack of commitment can destroy a team goals and tasks. We chose this presentation to learn more about commitment and its benefits within a team.

I learned that members who are not willing to help the team the reason for causing this dysfunction. Also, lack of commitment is caused by consensus and certainty. That was our introduction to the class. When it came to activities, we had spent too much time to find activities that would help us fist then the class to understand this kind of dysfunction. We had three activities that actually helped me to understand the lack of commitment. Why teams fail to commit. There are some reasons why teams fail to commit. First, miscommunication is one of the reasons that cause lack of commitment.

Having poor communication between the leader and his/her team members will lead to unclear instructions which obviously will lead to a breakdown of the team and eventually to failure. Second, leadership is an important skill that a leader must have in order to lead his or her team to success. Having an unqualified leader, whether his/her team members have great ability or not, more often will result in failure. Third, lack of planning is one of the issues that can destroy any task or project. Planning is considered as a basic foundation in team’s building. When there is no foundation, absolutely there is failure.

Forth, lack of accountability, which means that every member must contribute to help the team get the task done. Also, members should be prepared for consequences of a failed job. Most importantly, the leader has to point out the weak links between the team members and correct them. Fifth, unclear role designation often leads to lack of commitment. To solve unclear role designation, a person in charge must delegate roles to make sure that each member fulfills his/her duties. It is a clear example of how the smallest broken cog in a machine can result in the malfunction and complete breakdown of the whole team.

Finally, bad decision and poor judgment can often add to the team’s failure, depending upon the different thinking and the abilities of different team members. Personally, I used to have some these reasons. I am trying to overcome them. In this class, I have overcome some of the issues that I used to have. Above all, I remember the second week of this course. We studied about team- building skills. I also have in my journal some salient points that we should remember. These points are: * Teams exist to achieve goals * Teams’ members are interdependent regarding some common goals. * Teams are bounded a stable over time.

Teams’ members have the authority to manage their own work and internal processes. * Teams operate in a social system context. Most importantly, I learned a valuable skill which is keeping learning journal. Keeping journal is important in order to keep up with the class or anything else. To sum up, this course has helped me understanding the importance of teamwork in different situations. Also, the course has taught me about different type of people based on their TRUE COLORS and how to deal with them. In addition, I have learned about different roles that we can play in our lives.
