An analysis of the role played by philosophers Jean Jacques Rousseau, Thomas Hobbes and John Locke in establishing our basic concept of liberty.

This paper examines the revolutions that occurred in France and England and discusses how the philosophers played a part in each. The writer describes the impact these philosophers had on the relations between church and state in France and England, and claims that their writings have proven to be the basis for our modern concept of liberty.
“While Catholics wanted freedom to worship as they pleased, James sided with the few active would-be politicians who wanted the repeal of the Test Act of 1673 and the Act of 1678 which prevented Catholics from holding offices in both houses of Parliament. James said he could eliminate penal laws in individual cases and to suspend the operation of any law altogether. Hales’s case was brought to see if a Catholic to hold office in the army without being under rule of the Test Act.
