Although at the time it wasn’t the case, it was a future vision that ” all people are created equal” ( M. L. K. ) The central Idea or purpose of his speech was and is to still educate, motivate, and persuade everyone to do away with segeration between whites and blacks one race to another. In preparing the speech King studied the Bible, Gettysburg Address, and the Declaration of Independence which he alludes all three in his speech. He was already a known Reveron so it was natural for the tone to sound little church sermon yet descriptive.
He had competence, character which made people listen. He had Initial, derived, and terminal Credibility. He reasoned from principal, casual and analogical reasoning having Biblical references and literary illusions. King began to captivate his audience a Kings speech was really organized in problem solving order. persuading us to get rid of segregation. He does this by starting his speech with painting a visual picture . The opening of his speech starts with the metaphor ” Five score, Years ago, a great American”.
Through out the speech King states other metaphors, “segregation to manacles, a bad check to what is rightfully theirs, racial injustice to quick sand, vast ocean to material prosperity”. (M. L. K. ) Some of the smooth flowing transition statements that were used when King was changing topics to talk about were. ” Once the equality is practiced “and “Now is the time to lift our nation from the quicksands of racial injustice to the solid rock of brotherhood “. (M. L. K. )
The delivery and language that King used in his speech were si miles used in Kings speech was when he stated ” Until justice rolls down like water and righteous like a mighty stream”, ” This momentous decree came as a light of hope to millions of slaves who had been seared in the flames of withering injustice. It comes a joyous day break to end the long night of the captivity”. ( M. L. K. ). Allerations that were stated by King in the speech were ” Symbolic shadow we stand today” this was in reference to standing on the steps of the Lincoln memorial to the president who defeated southern states over slavery. Being behind a great leader” meaning the father of Emancipation Proclamation Lincoln. Another alleration is ” We can never be satisfied as long as our children are stripped of the self-hood and robbed of their dignity by signs stating”(M. L. K. ). The repetitition in the speech is with rhythm and was actually not even in the original speech the whole part of the speech when King states ” I Have A Dream’ was add libbed the day of the speech.
King uses repetition to touch on main points that King wants to express the most and generate strong emotion to and among leaders. When king keeps repeating ” I Have A Dream, Let Freedom Ring”. it is merely a technique to aid in memorability. Allegory in the speech is ” Negro being free”, and Persuading you to see and want the same. The Forecasting King used in the speech was stating in the beginning of the speech talking about ” Freedom ” and the at the end of the speech closes with “Freedom” (M. L. K. ).
The two examples of Hyperbole in the speech were the statements King made ” I have a dream that one day every valley shall be, exhausted, and every hill, and mountain shall be made low, the rough places will be made plain, and the crooked will be made straight”, the second example is ” And when this happens, When we allow freedom ring, when we let it hamlet, from every state, and every city we will be able to speed up that day when all Gods children black men, white men,Jews and Gentiles, Protestants and Catholics will be able to join hands and sing”. (M. L. K. ).
In this speech the two Antithesis that I chose were ” I have a dream that my four little children will one day live in nation where they will not judge by the color of their skin, but by the content of their character. I have a dream today”. the other being ” It came as the joyous day break to end the long night of their captivity”. (M. L. K. ) The parallel construction in the speech would be ” This is our faith”, and “Let Freedom ring”. While throughout the whole speech King maintained strong eye contact and delivered a powerful meaning and understanding for the social and political upheaval of the time.
King used volume and tone to emphasize the important parts of his speech that he wanted you to remember and pay attention to. King would get louder when he hit a part of the speech that he was passionate about. The themes are Freedom, we,our, you, nation, America, Justice and Injustice and Dream King uses in his speech to divide his message into main points he covered were “Now is the time” used to create urgency, ” We can never be satisfied”, sets some goals, ” I have a dream” Is mostly about peace, offering vision everyone could buy into. He also uses Geographical examples to ground and Illustrate logic of what he expects in the future.
Using Imagery in a positive manner ” Warm threshold which leads to palace of justice”,Sound Imagery in ” Let Freedom Ring”, Negative example of Imagery “Negro slaves have been seared in the flames of withering injustice “. this is instantly making you think of being burned alive and feel the emotion of context of Imagery being used. In Kings conclusion of the speech it has a dissolving ending mainly about Freedom. He says “I Have Dream which is an example of desire, as something is coming not knowing whether you will be in the time area or not but knowing its is inevitable.
He gives a what is in comparison to a shout out to United States, ” Let Freedom Ring from New York.. Pennsylvania.. , Colorado.. the all might Mountains of California. My reaction to and the evaluation of the speech was I was un aware how much of a subliminal message it had and how it was so close to being considered racism. Not to mention King had a similar paper in high school that he wrote with exact wording as the speech. Overall this speech helped and will continue helping the younger generations understand the Civil Rights movement and how it had a huge impact on his speech.
Kings magnetism and his sincerity raised familiar platitudes from cliche to commandment. The dream he had in 1963 is pretty much a existing reality in this day and age, it makes you wonder how much of that was strictly because of him. ” I Have a Dream is not an idealized American dream but a picture of a American nightmare of racial injustice.
