How Martin Luther King Predicted the Decline of the Mainline Church

1 January 2018

King letter was raw and the uncut truth of how white America treats African Americans unfairly, he saw himself as a prophet for justice and equality for all. “ Like Paul, I must constantly respond to the Macedonian call for aid,” he wanted to be the voice and the risk taker for his community and King was willing to do whatever it takes to get justice for the minorities. He utilized God and his faith to persuade the Christians to agree with his logic because the Christian faith believes we are all God’s children created equally and should get treated the same.” The judgment of God is upon the church as never before. If today’s church does not recapture the sacrificial spirit of the early church, it will lose its authenticity, forfeit the loyalty of millions, and be dismissed as an irrelevant social club with no meaning for the twentieth century”.

I think his letter was great because he achieved his goal by blending two important points in this essay the logic and emotion. He used his emotions by giving anecdotes of how white people treated colored people and used his logic with evidence indicating the truth. The combinations of these two elements can convince the majority of the readers to take with his argument. Dr. King letter is very relevant, in the past five years we have witnessed black people getting shot by police in the news and not getting convicted for their actions, Trayvon Martin, Tamir Rice, Michael Brown, Eric Garner, Freddie Gray and the list goes on. King letter demonstrated police brutality against African Americans isn’t new “I doubt that you would so quickly commend the policemen if you were to observe their ugly and inhumane treatment of Negroes here in the city jail; if you were to watch them push and curse old Negro women and young Negro girls; if you were to see them slap and kick old Negro men and young boys; if you were to observe them, as they did on two occasions, refuse to give us food because we wanted to sing our grace together.I cannot join you in your praise of the Birmingham police department”.

His letter proved that we have to protest and demand justice to seek freedom from oppression to fight justice over injustice. King did not only made his audience aware of the hardships black people were going through, also make the readers want to side with him. By placing his readers in situations that anyone can understand and appeals to their emotions, he totally convinced them that they need to support nonviolent direct action and help further the efforts of the civil rights movement.
