What makes music popular? Over 90% of responses have said that 3 things make a good song. Those three factors are lyrics, a melody line and a catchy rhythm (Forum. Microchemistry.

Com, 2014). My survey I created has reached a result to this question that most people said that the best type of music is the one with the most meaning. They said that the lyrics of the song make it good because they like that it has meaning and songs without meaning are worth nothing. Another factor they said that makes a popular song is that it has o be In tune and In sync with the beat.If the beat does not flow with the lyrics than It will Just be awkward and hard to follow (Survey Monkey, My Survey, 2014). From the teachers, music students, store workers and other individuals I interviewed they all had different types of music in which they like to listen to.

They said that certain types of instruments and objects can make a difference. What makes music unpopular? As shown in the Yahoo answers blob, the general public opinionated about what bad music is. These people think that bad music is either something out of tune, a song without a meaning or is just the opposite of what makes a good piece of music. From the people I Interviewed and the people who answered my survey, majority of them said that the only thing that can make a song bad Is If It Is out of beat because then It is just too hard to listen to. In 2012 a survey was conducted asking American teenagers which genre of music they would most prefer to listen too.The results name In and said that 18. 4% of teenagers would prefer to listen to pop more than any other style and Latin American, World Beat and Aka all equaled on an extremely low 0.

2%. This survey shows that something in these styles of music make then unappealing for listening (Satanist, 2014). How does music influence the actions and behavior of teenagers and other age groups? In a study of more than 1,400 adolescents ages 12 to 17, Rand researchers found that those who listened to music that objectified both sexes began having sex sooner than those who did not. Everyday Life ; Global Post, 2014) Drug and alcohol SE has come into the music scene very quickly through recent years especially with drug use. Different styles of music influence people to listen to the lyrics of the song and these songs can throw out messages to the crowd about drugs. In recent times the drug ;ecstasy or well known as ;molly has spread vastly over the EDM (Electronic Dance Music) stage and has impacted on the crowd. These people have started to 1 OFF Allophone, Spring Awakening and North Coast, said she’s noticed the presence of molly at all of the concerts she’s been to recently.

Now that EDM has become more popular, I think (molly) has also, because people become subjected to the lifestyle through these concerts,” Trash said. “I’d say more than 50 percent of the people (there) do, or at least do some type of acid or ecstasy. ” (The Huffing Post, 2014). 7 percent of 12th graders used marijuana in the past month, up from 5. 8 percent, 13. 8 percent, and 19. 4 percent in 2008 (Drugless. Ova, 2014). Music is known to set trends in teenage fashion. The artists who the audience listens to generally tends to want to dress like them and act like them as well.

This can be highly common in younger teenagers as they are easily influenced. One article in particular from the Global Post website talks about how pop music influences fashion into younger age groups throughout the US. It states ‘Pop music influences the fashion choices teenagers make. Pop musicians are trendsetters and are often featured in magazines, fashion blobs and various media that teenagers use for fashion inspiration.Teens also look up to these artists as cool and will often emulate heir styles on the red carpet and in music videos. The pressure to look cool may affect teenagers’ self-esteem if they cannot afford the clothes celebrities wear. You can encourage your teen to develop a personal sense of style and only rely on the music videos and artists as a source of inspiration’ (Everyday Life – Global Post, 2014).

As a teenager myself I can relate to this paragraph because I understand that not everyone has enough money to look like their favorite artist. If your friends dress like them and you don’t it can be hard to fit in with them. Is music better at a live concert or on a soundtrack/CD? Many factors affect whether individuals would rather go to a concert or stay at home downloading music. It is easier, cheaper and takes a lot less time to download music from the computer, phone etc, but does it give you the same feeling as to being in the zone at a concert going hard at it with your friends beside you like nothing matters. In this video, the narrator states that music has now become more of a media than a performing art (Are Amps & Vinyl Better than Live Music? 013). From my online survey I conducted for people aged between 14-24, 25% of people answered that they 25% gave different answers. These individuals answered with responded with ‘depends on the artist’, ‘if it is a band live, if it electronic recorded’ and to listen to by myself recorded but love a good concert’.

A person I had interviewed gave me her personal opinion on what she thought was more appealing to her and to the youth. She said “For myself I used to love going to concert when I was young. The crowd was always so alive and energetic; everyone would make new friends and get along. I enjoy going to concerts/music festivals because of the vibe from other people and I like to see my favorite artists up and close”. For her views on the youth and which hey prefer she replied with “l think the upcoming youth still love a concert or live show, but with the internet it’s much easier to access music. They can watch/stream music online which gives them the full experience but only on the couch and they can download music with Just one click and they have it forever. In my perspective technology has sort of ruined music concerts”.

Do music videos increase the popularity of music styles? Questions have been raised as to whether a music video can increase the amount of listeners towards that genre. If you were watching a music video would you rather it e powerful and show images that can make you want more or would you rather Just a blank page with no writing, no images or anything? Each different type of genre will have different images/videos to show to the audience. For electronic music it may be a music festival with lots of lights and people dancing e. G. A nightclub, for the soothing Indies music it could be of nature or things that make people relaxed and for death metal it may be dark, violent graphics that can disturb us or influence us to listen more. Most parents are concerned about what their young children see and ear, but as children grow older, parents pay less attention to the music and videos that capture and hold their children’s interest (Cape. Org, 2014).

How has technology changed popular music over the years?Technology could be one of the biggest factors as to why which music genre in most supported in teens. This is because the current generation Y has grown to live in the world of digital and technological music. Mainly computers have the majority contribution to this question. This is because most music is now either edited or made from modern technology instead of going from scratch. Do’s pop stars and omen bands have used different computer programs to alter the sounds of their songs to make them sound better and result in a much clearer quality. As digital technology became more widespread, music makers were able to use tools that were previously only available in analog form, such as mixers and effects. I recently conducted an interview with a current worker at a music store.

I asked him this question and he replied with “In the time that I have worked here I have realized that more and more people are buying electronic equipment such as mixers, electronic keyboards, turntables and other items. Not surprisingly these people are all young and if I had to guess, probably between the ages of 15-30” (Employee, 3 years experience in store, 9/3/2014).
