Instead of always travelling to the mainland for vacations, Hawaii residents should first experience the uniqueness of vacationing right here on a neighbor island. INTRODUCTION (Attention Step) I. (Attention getter): Over the PA system the agent announced the arrival of United flight 93 arriving from Los Angeles, California. I waited at the baggage claim entrance where I stood there holding my lei and sign with the names of the visitors I was to greet from their flight. As the people started to flow out of the doors I called out, “Mr. and Mrs.
Robert Williams”, all the while thinking about what I was going to cook for dinner and wondering what my kids were doing. When the visitors finally arrived, I was quickly brought back to my reality as I greeted each one with a lei and I said, “Aloha, welcome to Kauai. ” With excited smiles on their faces they thanked me and told me how excited they were to be in Hawaii and how they couldn’t wait to start their vacation. The thing that really hit me was when they said, “You are so lucky you live in Hawaii! ” Immediately I was reminded of how true that statement is.
It’s ironic that it took a visitor from another part of the world to remind me that yes, Hawaii is an amazing place to explore, even for those of us who already live here. (Reveal Topic): This morning, I’d like to encourage all of you to seriously consider taking your next vacation on any of our Hawaiian islands instead of travelling out of state. Even though there are many places all over the world to visit, I’m saying that it is also worthwhile to choose to a vacation on a neighbor island too. (Relevancy): Now, you might be asking yourself, why would I want to take a vacation in Hawaii when I already live here?
And that is a great question. While many of us have lived here for most of our lives, few have had the opportunity to travel to all of the outer islands. Yes, many of us have done the sports or hula trip and the occasional family gathering or reunion trip, but how many of us can say that we’ve gone to really explore the islands to their fullest the way so many tourists from all over the world do? I don’t think very many of us can really say that. Yet we’ll save our money to visit places like California or Las Vegas time and time again.
It’s my hope that one day we all get the chance to experience all the beauty Hawaii has to offer. Creditability and Good Will): Working in the tourism industry for years, I’ve had many opportunities to visit some of the most spectacular places in Hawaii. I’ve also had many conversations with visitors who confirm the beauty of our islands. I have also researched this topic carefully. (Preview Main Points): First, I’d like to address some of the problems or concerns people have with vacationing here on a neighbor island instead of out of state. Then, I’d like to share some ideas to help eliminate those problems, and finally I’d like to paint a picture of the perfect island vacation.
The two most common concerns I’ve heard from Hawaii residents are that they want to experience something “different” when they go on vacation, and that they think vacations in Hawaii can be too expensive, which leads them to believe that they are better off travelling somewhere else. A. Hawaii residents want to explore unique and different settings and experiences when they travel on vacation.
Most people see the same view of the Pacific Ocean and the Waianae or Koolau Mountain Range every day and although the view is beautiful, when people go on vacation, they want to look at something different, but they assume that the neighbor island settings will be the same as their everyday scenery. When we travel, we like to visit unique and exciting places that all of our family members can enjoy – a destination that includes something for everybody in the family, right? 2. B. Another very real concern is the cost of an interisland vacation.
The problem is that many people assume that it probably costs just as much money to visit a neighbor island as it does to visit the mainland. a. It may be true that inter-island flights have increased in price over the last few years due to many factors such as the loss of Aloha Airlines and the increase in fuel costs, but there are deals if you choose wisely. It may also be true that people who are repeat visitors to towns like Las Vegas, can get special deals for expenses like hotels there, but there are also excellent Kamaaina rates for hotels, cars and attractions right here in Hawaii.
Also, you’ve all heard the saying “time is money” and you’ve probably been on a trip to the mainland when you arrive too late at night from your flight to make the most of your first vacation day or too earlier in the morning that you can’t even check in to your hotel. b. c. 2. The bottom line is that we all are challenged with the problem planning a vacation that is cost effective so that we can get the most out of every dollar we spend, especially for a family vacation. (Transitional Summary): So as you can see, the problem is that people want a vacation that offers some kind of unique experience, but that is also cost effective.
Now, I’d like to explain how a vacation to a neighbor island can provide you with an exciting and unique experience for you and your entire family and can also be affordable, all while staying right here in Hawaii! 2 A. Let’s start by talking about costs because this is a very important concern. 1. As an example, I did a price comparison on various travel websites to look for airfares and I found that it is still cheaper to fly interisland instead of to California. a.
On Hawaiian Airlines, it costs $160 roundtrip from Oahu to Lihue, Kauai during the week of December 14 through 21 (Hawaiianair. com) and the flight takes only 20 minutes, which allows more time for your vacation, and no jet lag! During the same week, the cheapest flight I found from Oahu to Los Angeles, California was through “tripadvisor” where Hawaiian Airlines was providing the lowest fare of all the carriers at $750 round trip (tripadvisor. com). That is a cost difference of $590 and the flight takes four to five hours.
Also, there are many flights between the neighbor islands, which means you can fly at a time that is convenient for you and you don’t have to deal with time zones or getting acclimated to weather. When you fly to the mainland, you have little flexibility and often arrive too late at night to really do anything that day or too early in the morning to even check in to your hotel. b. d. 2. Hotel costs can also be more affordable here on a neighbor island due to special discounts that are provided to Hawaii residents. a.
Major hotel chains such as Hilton and Marriott offer special discounted rates to Hawaii Kamaaiana, especially during times of the year that are considered off-season (Foster, 2011). You can even find special package deals with extras such as free breakfast, parking or even spa treatments (Bootsnall Travel Network, LLC, 2011). b. B. Each one of our Hawaiian islands is so unique and depending on what your interests are, you are going to satisfy them on one of the islands, from Hawaii Island to Moloka’i, there is something for everyone.
