When did each become a significant or notable minority group? The most common race minorities in the United States are the African Americans and Hispanics. The most common ancestral background of African Americans are African. The most common ancestral background of Hispanics are Mexican. Both of these groups became significant in the 1970’s, especially the African American population. The Hispanic population rose to more prominence in the 1980’s.

In what ways have laws been used to implement discrimination? Provide examples. These laws were intended against which racial minorities? Institutional discrimination has allowed the implementation of discrimination.The way that banking institutions evaluate who receives loans and credit goes against the African American and Hispanic population in that they do not have access to the proper references and insurance in minority areas is excessively high and simply unaffordable. Tests that judge aptitude and comprehension among students are manipulated to target the weaknesses of Black and Hispanic students while boosting the intelligence of middle class White students with the line of questioning that they are allowed to use. Employment is limited and those that have committed crimes in their past are immediately eliminated from the hiring process and can legally be called out in the application process. The majority of African Americans have criminal records and are automatically discarded as potential employees.This also goes along with many positions requiring several years experience that targets African American and Hispanic employees that very seldom have the amount of experience needed as these ethnicites are just recently being allowed to hold positions dominated by White men and have not been able to acquire the experience thus far.

In what ways have laws been used to eliminate discrimination? Provide examples. Did the laws work to eliminate discrimination? Legislation such as affirmative action have been used to eliminate discrimination by forcing the equality in employment facilities. Physical proportions not necessary for adequate completion of a job were not sighted as a means to deny one employment. One could not be overlooked for a raise or an employment position for someone less qualified but a family member of those within hiring company.Racial categories and gender could not be specific reason cited to keep one from obtaining employment or competitive salary at a company. The Civil Rights Act was one of the largest legislations adopted to eliminate discrimination. This was the birthplace for the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission that investigates issues regarding racial, gender, and age complaints in the workplace.

These laws did not eliminate discrimination although they do alleviate it. There are still those that manipulate the system to find loop holes and ways to ‘legally’ use discrimination without bringing attention to themselves. I see no way to eliminate discrimination unless you can control one’s thoughts and behavior, which is impossible.
