Religion: The Root of All Evil?

4 April 2015
A look at religion through the eyes of critics, including both the author’s and Gore Vidal’s.

Religion can be defined as a set of values, rituals and beliefs that a certain community shares. Inevitably, religion has always had a strong influence on politics and sociology, two social sciences that are concerned with the manner in which human beings organize themselves as a society. The desired, and the actual, effects that religion exhorts on a society is very much open to debate. This paper will examine the effects that the three monotheistic religions had on Western society. Since the similarities between them transcend the differences, the three religions will be analyzed, for the most part, as one set of beliefs and values.
