Melissa Felder an author with a hearing disability who attended Yale University explains her experience at Yale in her article, “How Yale Supports Students With Disabilities”; along with how other students with disabilities are treated as well. Although she does touch some on other students she focuses more on her hearing disability. Felder goes in to detail on her experience inside of the classroom along with outside they classroom. She compares how it was at first when she began at the university compared to how it changed over the course of her time there.
Felder’s goals out of this article are to educated others simply on how students with disabilities have it at universities and how these universities help make these students fit right in. Not to say that all Universities provide the exact same resources as Yale does; some may have better while others worst. Overall Felder helps show the audience her goals by giving us more of an understanding of college life with a disability, what the campus does offer and does not offer as far as resources, and how students with disabilities are affected.

By putting all these into her article she provides the audience with grave information on the subject; education the public on what we do not consider on a day to day basis. 2 of 3 Audience is key to Felder making a statement in her article; she could just target anyone but she is mostly consulting college students and college officials. She begins to grab the audience with sympathy at first; but she does not want the audience to take pity of her. Instead she describes the struggles she has such as “these frustrations are but a small part of my experiences and have not stopped me from taking advantage of all Yale has to offer.
” This creates a bond with the audience; a relationship that brings the reader to a closer understanding. She then goes in to describe how lectures and seminars are hard to sometimes comprehend. After explaining her struggles throughout the beginning of college; she then gives the audience a solution to each problem. By showing her knowledge on certain programs that the college offers gives the reader confidence on her topic; that she has evidence to back up her knowledge on Yale Universities disability resources.
Felder includes the Resource Office on Disabilities (ROD) in her article; describing how they gave her a court reporter to help her in class lectures. Not only does she point out that the University has a special center made out for students with disabilities, she also credits the professors. Felder states “I cannot recall a professor who was unwilling to allow that captioning or who would not meet with me during office hours…” giving hard evidence on the help from professors. Now with an understanding on some of Felder’s techniques to grab a readers attention; we have a sense on the use of ethos, pathos, and even some logos.
As stated earlier Felder begins the article off with emotion making the reader feel more of an insight on how college life can be having a disability; such as having a hearing impairment. Then by showing authority she then lets the audience know that this article is not for the reader to feel pity on students who do have disabilities; but more so of that they can also accomplish just the same as the average student. 3 of 3 Which brings in reason; after all What is Felder’s purpose on writing an article about her experience at Yale? Basically making others aware, once a crowd knows then something can be done.
Yes,; Yale does already offer some programs but can it make every students with a disability feel right at home or do they need more. How would we know unless a student with an insight let us see it in their own view? Which brings me to my next view on the article “How Yale Supports Students With Disabilities” the shape of this article is not just showing how Yale offers great resources; but also how they lack some. Felder goes on to say “Mobility-impaired students cannot visit every dorm or college, and they cannot gain access to the facilities in all of the colleges”; Felder did an excellent job on providing a good argument for her article.
By doing this she does not show favoritism just because the University makes her feel comfortable but she also puts in a voice for students who still have a hard time at the University. Overall Melissa Felder does an excellent job on getting her point across to the audience; with the use of sympathy, knowledge and reason. The use of all three create a convincing argument in the article. The audience can now have more knowledge on what certain Universities have and do not have. Once people know then things can be improved and changed overall; which accomplishes Felder’s goal on her article.
