The issue of whether exercise stress testing should be used to screen asymptomatic men has prompted considerable debate (Evans & Karunaratne, 1992, pp. 121-132). An analysis using a cost/benefit model found little additional benefit from screening asymptomatic patients at average risk of cardiovascular disease. Many of the assumptions in this analysis can be criticized, and the case for or against the use of exercise stress testing in high-risk patients was not separately analyzed.
