McKnight is the director of the Community Studies Program at the Center for Urban Affairs and Policy Research at Northwestern University. He uses his experience working in communities and at the center as the basis for most of the book. The work is not a scholarly text, but a series of observations and opinions based on McKnight’s experiences which he supports by examples, studies, and anecdotes.
